Holding Space for Festive Lights and Complicated Feelings

“Yes, our service is at six o’clock this evening,” the person on the other end of the phone said pleasantly. I called a familiar church to see if they held a Blue Christmas Service for me to attend. Earlier that day, I’d told my husband I felt empty this Christmas season and thought attending such a service might help. The receptionist’s response was more than information; it was a confirmation.
