Watermelon
Watermelon
Did you know there are multiple varieties of watermelon?
Lately, my sister has been bragging about the orange watermelon she loves. I’ve been looking for it, but I only found the yellow variety.
Earlier this week, I drove to the nearest Harris Teeter to purchase produce; watermelon was the top fruit on my list.
As I worked my way through the parking lot, I remembered the watermelon man coming to our neighborhood when I was a child. “Waaaaaatermelon!” the watermelon man would sing while riding up and down the street in his tattered pickup truck, waking up the neighborhood.
Although the foyer of Harris Teeter was filled with boxes of whole watermelon, I wanted to be sure I got a yellow or orange one. I saw a young man carefully unloading produce onto a display stand. “Hello, sir,” I said.
He looked confused, like, I'm not a sir. “Yes, ma’am,” he responded politely.
“Do you have any yellow or orange watermelon?” I asked.
He confirmed they had it and led me to pink and yellow watermelon halves at the endcap of the salad bar. Harris Teeter, bad placement! The half yellow watermelon was $10 while a whole watermelon (contents unknown) was $3.99 each. Make it make sense, y’all.
Anyway, the ruddy-skinned young employee and I stood there looking at the selections and chatted.
“What does it taste like?” he questioned.
“A little sweet but not as sweet as pink watermelon,” I answered.
He told me he loved watermelon but never tried the yellow variety. We chatted a little more about melon and other things. Eventually, I thanked him and wished him a nice weekend.
Once home, I cut the watermelon from the rind, eating some and storing the rest in an airtight container. It was juicy, messy, and refreshing.
Later, Curnell arrived home with an additional whole watermelon. I thought, “What are we going to do with all of this fruit?” With groceries so expensive, I hate anything ripening too soon or going bad before I can eat it. Half of his watermelon was cut into cubes, filled one container, and the other half remained in the rind. I hope we can share it with someone.
Later that evening, I mixed the two varieties for a salad, which paired wonderfully with my ribs.
THIS has kept a smile on my face lately; enjoying juicy watermelon, filled with health benefits. I am enjoying it and feeling good about this one indulgence.
What has made you smile lately?
